Tony Torres-Aponte is among the pioneers of mixed martial arts in the United States. Torres-Aponte has been practicing Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu ("BJJ") for over twenty years in the U.S., making him one of the longest North American practitioners. He was introduced to BJJ by the Gracie brothers in the mid-1980s while living in Torrance, California.() He trained under Royce and Rickson Gracie early on in his career and received his BJJ Black Belt from Royce Gracie.()() Before training in BJJ, Torres-Aponte trained in Muay Thai under Nam Pha "Lot" Sarhardechio.
